Abstract:
This research examines the challenges and opportunities for decarbonizing the freight transport sector in ASEAN, a region with a significant role in global trade and economic growth. With transport contributing substantially to greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating freight decarbonization is essential for achieving regional and global climate and sustainability goals.
The study investigates the current decarbonization landscape across ASEAN, focusing on policies, technologies, infrastructure, and emissions. A mixed-methods approach is applied, combining a comprehensive literature review with online workshops, in-depth interviews, and structured surveys involving government representatives, industry stakeholders, and relevant experts. The research identifies key barriers, including high investment costs, technological limitations, infrastructure gaps, and policy and institutional challenges, while exploring opportunities for stronger policy frameworks, technological adoption, and regional cooperation.
The findings will provide a comprehensive understanding of freight transport decarbonization in ASEAN and develop practical recommendations to support the transition toward a low-carbon freight transport system, contributing to environmental sustainability and regional and international climate objectives.
